Collectible Shadow Boxes

After many years of collecting antiques and illustrating professionally, Karen has found a medium to combine her two loves.  Spending hours scouring flea markets, antique shows and tag sales to find unusual toys, trims and treasures, she then spends many more hours arranging her finds into interesting and unusual shadow boxes.  Some boxes are enhanced with pen and ink illustration or watercolors.

These shadow boxes are truly three dimensional illustrations. Each box has a theme, such as circuses, travel, weddings, Americana, old kitchens, trains, or just fantasy.  Boxes can also be made for special order to personalize an important occasion.

The shadow box frames are finished in a way to enhance their contents–crackle finish to appear old, decoupage, or with material and old trim.  No attention to detail is too small.  Even the backs of the boxes are beautifully finished.  Most boxes have titles, and all shadow boxes are signed by the artist.  Each one is a unique piece of artwork, and with one-of-a-kind objects, can never be duplicated.  Karen’s boxes are currently on display at the Frank J. Miele Gallery, 1086 Madison Avenue, New York.  They  have also been featured in the window of the gift shop of The Museum of American Folk Art in New York, the Wilton Historical Society’s American Craftsmanship Show, The Family Album (a popular Westport store), and exhibited at local juried shows. Her boxes have also appeared in two books by Country Living magazine, in Romantic Homes magazine, and in Sesame Street Magazine.  Karen has been featured on HGTV’s Carol Duvall Show.  She will be a featured artist in Mary Englebreit’s Home Companion magazine in the June/July 2005 issue.

Karen graduated from Clark University and the School of the Worcester Art Museum.  She spent most of her professional career in illustration and graphic arts, including her own design studio.  After the birth of her two children, Karen continued to freelance her pen and ink illustration to local companies and clients.  She has lived inWestport for over twenty-five years with her husband and two children.
